BAU Insights 2025: Innovative Timber Connection System
During our visit to BAU Munich, we spoke with Markus Schilcher, X-fix wood connector CEO about the X-fix system, an ingenious double dovetail connector for CLT panels that eliminates the need for metal in timber connections.
What caught our attention was the practical efficiency demonstrated in the assembly process: when connecting large CLT ceiling sheets, instead of using traditional wrenches to pull slabs together, the X-fix connector creates its own connection force while being hammered into place.
Technical highlights:
• The 90mm connector can withstand approximately 28 kN in shear and tensile load
• A single connector substitutes up to 16 screws
• Available in various sizes (from 33mm to 130mm) for different applications
• Made from birch plywood, maintaining an all-wood construction
Beyond CLT, the system is evolving toward lighter, more cost-effective structures. The X-fix mini (33mm) has been used in projects with 28-meter BauBuche beams with just 40mm Kerto panels as ceiling elements.
The video also demonstrates versatile material combinations: CLT with Magnumboard, glulam with CLT panels, and solutions for window and door openings that reduce material waste.
